Why buy packet mix taco seasoning when it’s as simple and tasty as this?
As you may have guessed, my family loves Mexican food. Typically on our meal planning section of our family whiteboard, there will be at least one request for some sort of Mexican dish, like tacos, burritos, taco soup (recipe here), taco salad (recipe here), chili con carne (recipe here) or our family invention of taco nacho dippos (recipe here). We started making these dishes with taco seasoning packet mixes, because it’s usually cheap and easy to use. But then realized that a lot of the packet mixes contain wheat. Or milk. Which are both off-limits for me.
Then I found that you could buy a jar of chipotle peppers in adobe sauce. And started using that, blending them in the food processor along with the beans. We found these gave the zing of flavor that we loved. Which is why you’ll find it in a lot of the recipes above. But then I looked at the ingredients of the chipotle peppers, and found sugar. What the …? Since I’m loving how I feel when I do the Whole30, I wanted to find a recipe for taco seasoning that didn’t have sugar in it. And so I found this one. In the Whole30 cookbook. Which is awesome (just saying!).
Just a small word of advice – either buy ground coriander and black pepper to begin with, or make sure you grind all the peppercorns really well before using. Henry used this seasoning in his tacos recently (for his Kids Cooking night) and sampled some meat with an uncrushed peppercorn. It didn’t go very well!
This seasoning definitely has all the right ingredients to make your tacos zing – trust me!
