Wk 16 (Sept 24 – 30)

Week 16 done of my US National Food challenge with 4 out of 7 accomplished!  I’m wondering if anyone out there cares about my quest, apart from me and my family!  If you do get these e-mails, if you read these posts, PLEASE comment below, or in suggestions, or (better) subscribe to the e-mails that let you know when I post a new recipe or something different on this website.

September 24 – National Cherries Jubilees Day

Cherries jubilee is a dessert dish made with cherries and liqueur, which is subsequently flambéed, and commonly served as a sauce over vanilla ice cream (from Wikipedia).  Again, not being a drinker of things alcoholic, I sat this day out.

September 25 – Crab Meat Newburg Day / National Food Service Employees Day

First impressions once I saw what this day was about was ‘What the …?’  Crab meat newburg is a dish with crab, sherry and sour cream … seafood is not a winner for the other members of my family, sherry is not a winner for me … and not being a food service employee, I sat this day out too.

September 26 – Pancake Lovers Day

This is one that I thought would be a walk in the park.  I mean, even my kids make awesome pancakes, without any help from either me or Grant (standard recipe here).  So I got up early to make pancakes for the family, with a gluten-free flour blend that hasn’t let me down in any other baking adventures … and had a dismal fail.  The first batch were way too thick, they stuck to the griddle, you get the picture.  Grant came to the rescue, though, and made some awesome pancakes out of my attempt at batter.  Added fried eggs, bacon and maple syrup for the full-on US breakfast experience.  Yum! 2014-09-26 Pancakes

September 27 – National Chocolate Milk Day

2014-09-27 Chocolate milk Chocolate chips, milk, a bit of cream (and a little bit of ice cream as well, made for a yummy chocolate milk drink! Enjoyed by all the family, gluten-free and refreshing in the middle of the stressful lives we live!

September 28 – Strawberry Cream Pie Day

A-ha!  I get to try a cream pie again!  So this time I used my shortcrust pastry base (recipe here), rolled out nice and thin, added some frozen strawberries to a cream cheese, whipped cream and icing/powdered sugar mixture.  Yummy!!  It was a real treat for all the family! 2014-09-28 Strawberry Cream Pie

September 29 – National Coffee Day

No one in my family likes coffee (we must be strange!), so another rest day for me.

September 30 – National Hot Mulled Cider Day

This was actually Henry’s birthday so we did this day a little early.  Mulled cider – apple juice, cloves and a few other spices, tasted very sweet – but just following the recipe, I wonder why I needed to add brown sugar to already-sweetened juice – any ideas?  It was WAY too sweet and I could only have a few sips before pouring down the drain … 2014-09-30 Mulled Cider
