Wk 11 (Aug 20 – 26)

Week 11 done of my US National Food challenge with 5 out of 7 accomplished!

August 20 – Lemonade Day

2014-08-20 Lemonade scones If today was Lemonade day, why is there a picture of scones here (I hear you ask)?  Well, I found a recipe for lemonade scones … and wanted to try it.  They worked ok, but not brilliant.  The kids loved them for breakfast though!

August 21  National Pecan Torte Day

Apparently pecan torte is a fancy way of saying a pecan cake.  Clicking on the link in my list of US Food Days gave me a recipe that I had to adapt to both gluten-free flour, and not having a set of 2 round cake tins to do the correct filling.  Surprisingly, this was REALLY yummy!  The chocolate frosting used sour cream, but it was a totally different taste and texture to usual cakes and I am definitely going to make this again!  2014-08-21 Pecan torte

 August 22 – Eat a Peach Day

2014-08-22 Spinach peach salad I contemplated making peach muffins or something like that, but as you’ve noted, most of the days are quite dessert-type, or junk-food type, so I decided to make something a little healthier.  I made a spinach and peach salad (recipe here) – very yummy and much better for me!

August 23 – National Sponge Cake Day

Not exactly my success story of the week – it was supposed to be a sponge cake roll.  I took it out of the oven too early, it rose too much in a too small container, so I couldn’t roll it.  Then … let’s just say I’m glad I got the photo I did!  Always room for trying again, I guess.  2014-08-23 Sponge cake

August 24 – National Peach Pie Day

2014-08-24 Peach pie While I have made a peaches and cream pie previously, I wanted to try a peach pie with my normal pie crust (the infamous ‘ugly crust‘) with a concoction of peaches & sugar to be the filling, added some crumble and a creamy icing on top and you have instant yum!

August 25 – Whiskey Sour Day

Another day celebrating alcohol, so I sat this one out.

August 26 – Cherry Popsicle Day

We still don’t have popsicle containers, so unless I wanted to go and find a cherry popsicle to buy and eat, I thought I’d have a rest day today as well!

Coming up next week:

  • August 27: National Pots de Creme day / Banana Lover’s Day
  • August 28: National Cherry Turnover day
  • August 29: More Herbs, Less Salt day / Whiskey Sour Day / Swiss Winegrowers Day / Chop Suey Day / Lemon Juice Day
  • August 30: National Toasted Marshmallow day
  • August 31: Eat Outside day / National Trail Mix day
  • September 1: National Cherry Popover day
  • September 2: National Blueberry Popsicle day

Stay tuned to see which ones I choose to make/eat and how successful (or not) I am!
